How to calculate how much LVT flooring you need

Measuring for luxury vinyl tile flooring is straightforward once you know the length and width of the space. Our LVT flooring calculator does the maths for you, adds your chosen wastage allowance and then rounds the final quantity up to complete boxes of flooring.

The basic LVT calculation

For a rectangular room, multiply the room length by the room width. This gives you the floor area in square metres.

Length × Width = Floor Area

For example, a room measuring 5 metres long by 4 metres wide has a floor area of 20m².

How much extra LVT should you order?

You should normally order more flooring than the exact measured area because some material will be used for cuts and fitting.

  • 5%: very simple rectangular rooms
  • 10%: sensible allowance for most rooms
  • 15%: more complicated layouts
  • 20%: intricate layouts or where extra spare material is wanted

How many boxes of LVT do I need?

LVT flooring is normally sold in complete boxes. Once the required square metre figure has been calculated, divide it by the coverage provided by one box.

Required m² ÷ Box Coverage = Boxes

Always round the result up. You cannot normally order part of a box, which is why this calculator automatically rounds to the next complete box.

Measuring an L-shaped or irregular room

Don't try to measure a complicated floor area as one shape. Split the room into two or more rectangles, measure each area separately and add them together.

How do I calculate how much LVT flooring I need?
Multiply the length of the room by its width to calculate the floor area. Then add an allowance for fitting waste. Finally divide the required area by the square metre coverage of each box and round the answer up to a full box.
How many boxes of LVT flooring do I need?
Divide the total flooring requirement, including wastage, by the coverage provided by one box. If the answer is not a whole number, round it up. The calculator above does this automatically.
How much extra LVT flooring should I order?
Around 10% extra is a sensible allowance for many standard rooms. Simpler layouts may use less, while complicated rooms and patterned installations may require more.
Can I calculate several rooms together?
Yes. Use the “Add another room or area” button and enter the dimensions of each space. The calculator combines all of the areas before adding wastage and calculating the number of boxes required.
Can I enter room measurements in feet?
Yes. Select Feet at the top of the calculator. Your measurements will automatically be converted and your result will still be shown in square metres, which is how most UK flooring is sold.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split the room into two rectangular sections and measure the length and width of each section separately. Add both sections to the calculator and it will combine their total floor area.
Does herringbone LVT need more wastage?
Patterned floors can require a larger cutting allowance than a straightforward plank installation. The exact allowance depends on the room and layout, so speak to your fitter if you are unsure before ordering.
Is this LVT calculator suitable for glue-down flooring?
Yes. The calculator works from floor area and box coverage, so it can be used for glue-down LVT in plank, tile and herringbone formats. Always use the pack coverage shown on the individual flooring product.
