Installation & Care

F46 dries to a permanently tacky film, creating a strong initial grab that helps prevent LVT planks and tiles from moving during installation. This makes it particularly useful for herringbone floors, borders and detailed flooring designs where accurate positioning matters. Its high bond strength and excellent resistance to plasticisers provide a reliable, long-lasting installation.

The adhesive can be used on suitably prepared absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors, including concrete, sand and cement screeds, calcium sulphate screeds, plywood, flooring-grade chipboard and approved smoothing compounds. It is also suitable for use with normal underfloor heating systems.

Each 15-litre tub covers up to 75m², depending on the trowel used and the condition and absorbency of the subfloor. Drying starts from approximately 40 minutes, after which the adhesive retains an indefinite open time while remaining tacky.

FAQs

What is Styccobond F46 used for?

Styccobond F46 is used to secure a wide range of PVC and vinyl floorcoverings, including LVT planks, vinyl tiles and sheet vinyl. Always check that the adhesive is approved for the specific flooring being installed.

Is F46 suitable for luxury vinyl tiles?

Yes. Its pressure sensitive properties and strong initial tack make it particularly suitable for LVT planks and tiles, including patterned, border and herringbone installations where movement must be minimised.

How long does Styccobond F46 take to dry?

The adhesive begins drying from approximately 40 minutes, although this will vary according to temperature, humidity and subfloor absorbency. On a non-absorbent surface, allow the adhesive to dry to a firm tack before laying the flooring.

What does “infinite open time” mean?

Once F46 has dried to its permanently tacky film, it does not have the same short installation window as a conventional wet-set adhesive. The flooring can be positioned after the adhesive has reached the correct tack, subject to site conditions and the flooring manufacturer’s instructions.

Does F46 dry completely hard?

No. It is designed to dry to a permanently tacky pressure sensitive film rather than forming a completely hard layer. Pressure from the installed flooring and rolling creates the bond.

Can F46 be used with underfloor heating?

Yes, it is suitable for normal underfloor heating installations. The heating must be switched off for at least 48 hours before, during and after application.

Which subfloors can it be applied to?

F46 can be used over suitably prepared:

  • Concrete and sand/cement screeds
  • Calcium sulphate or anhydrite screeds
  • Plywood
  • Flooring-grade chipboard and hardboard
  • STOPGAP smoothing compounds
  • Approved epoxy waterproof surface membranes
  • Smooth, suitable non-absorbent subfloors

All surfaces must be structurally sound, smooth, clean, dry and free from substances that could prevent adhesion.

Can F46 be applied to a damp subfloor?

Not directly. The subfloor should normally measure below 75% relative humidity. Where the reading exceeds 75% RH, an appropriate waterproof surface membrane must be applied before installation.

Does the subfloor need priming?

Highly absorbent subfloors may require priming to prevent the adhesive from drying too quickly. Calcium sulphate screeds also require the appropriate primer. Follow the current F. Ball technical data sheet before installation.

How is F46 applied?

Stir the adhesive thoroughly, then spread it evenly using the appropriate notched trowel. The floorcovering should be pressed from the centre outwards and rolled in both directions using a 68kg flooring roller. F. Ball recommends rolling the flooring again between one and four hours later.

Can vinyl flooring be welded immediately after installation?

No. F. Ball states that vinyl should not normally be welded until the adhesive has developed a good bond, usually after approximately 24 hours.

Is F46 waterproof?

F46 should not be described as a waterproof adhesive or damp-proof membrane. Where moisture protection is required, an appropriate waterproof surface membrane should be installed first.

Is it suitable for conservatories or areas with extreme heat?

F46 is approved for normal underfloor heating, but suitability for conservatories, floor-to-ceiling windows or areas exposed to extreme temperature changes should be checked against F. Ball’s current Recommended Adhesives Guide. A specialist temperature-tolerant adhesive may be required.

How should the adhesive be stored?

Store the unopened tub between 5°C and 30°C and protect it from frost. Shelf life is approximately 12 months when stored unopened under suitable conditions.
