Installation & Care

F. Ball Styccobond F46 Pressure Sensitive Vinyl Adhesive is designed for securing a wide range of vinyl sheet and tile floorcoverings, including luxury vinyl tiles and LVT planks.

Its pressure sensitive formula dries to a permanently tacky film, providing excellent initial grab and high bond strength. This helps minimise movement while flooring is being positioned, making F46 particularly suitable for herringbone patterns, borders and detailed LVT designs.

The adhesive also helps reduce the risk of trowel serrations showing through thin vinyl floorcoverings. Once the adhesive has reached the correct tack, it offers an indefinite open time, giving installers greater flexibility when positioning the flooring.

F46 can be applied to correctly prepared concrete, sand and cement screeds, calcium sulphate screeds, plywood, flooring-grade chipboard, hardboard and suitable smoothing compounds. It can also be applied directly to approved epoxy waterproof surface membranes and other smooth, non-absorbent subfloors.

The 5-litre tub provides up to 25m² of coverage, depending on the trowel used, the absorbency of the subfloor and site conditions. It is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems and is approved for marine flooring installations.

FAQs

What is F. Ball Styccobond F46 used for?

F46 is used for securing a wide range of PVC and vinyl floorcoverings, including LVT planks, vinyl tiles and sheet vinyl. The specific flooring should always be checked against the current F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide.

Is F46 suitable for LVT flooring?

Yes. F46 has true pressure sensitive properties and is particularly suitable for design floorcoverings such as luxury vinyl tiles. Its strong initial tack helps reduce movement when installing planks, tiles, borders and patterned flooring.

How much flooring will a 5L tub cover?

Coverage depends on the trowel used:

1.5mm × 5mm V-notched trowel: Up to 25m²

A1 fine-notched trowel: Up to 20m²

A2 V-notched trowel: Up to 15m²

Coverage may be lower on rough, uneven or absorbent subfloors.

How long does Styccobond F46 take to dry?

Drying begins from approximately 40 minutes, depending on the temperature, humidity and absorbency of the subfloor. The flooring should not be installed until the adhesive has reached the correct tack.

What does pressure sensitive adhesive mean?

A pressure sensitive adhesive dries to a tacky film rather than remaining wet. The bond is created when the flooring is placed into the adhesive and firmly pressed or rolled into position.

Does F46 dry completely hard?

No. F46 is designed to dry to a permanently tacky film. This is a normal characteristic of the product and allows it to maintain its pressure sensitive properties.

What does indefinite open time mean?

Once F46 has dried to the correct tack, it does not have the same short installation window as a conventional wet-set adhesive. This gives installers more time to position flooring accurately, although the adhesive must be kept clean and free from dust or contamination.

Can F46 be used for herringbone LVT?

Yes. Its strong initial tack helps minimise movement while individual planks are being positioned, making it particularly useful for herringbone, borders and detailed flooring designs.

Which subfloors can F46 be applied to?

F46 can be applied to correctly prepared:

  • Concrete
  • Sand and cement screeds
  • Calcium sulphate screeds
  • Plywood
  • Flooring-grade chipboard
  • Hardboard
  • STOPGAP smoothing compounds
  • Approved epoxy waterproof surface membranes
  • Suitable smooth, non-absorbent surfaces

The surface must be structurally sound, smooth, clean and sufficiently dry before installation.

Can F46 be applied directly to asphalt?

Sound flooring-grade asphalt must first be skimmed with at least 3mm of an appropriate STOPGAP smoothing compound before applying F46.

Can F46 be used with underfloor heating?

Yes. It is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems. The heating system must be controlled in accordance with the flooring and adhesive installation instructions.

Is F46 waterproof?

F46 is not a damp-proof membrane. Where excessive subfloor moisture is present, an appropriate waterproof surface membrane may be required before the adhesive and flooring are installed.

Does the subfloor need to be prepared?

Yes. The subfloor must be smooth, clean, structurally sound and sufficiently dry. Uneven surfaces should be prepared with a suitable smoothing compound, and contaminants that could interfere with adhesion must be removed.

How should F46 be applied?

Stir the adhesive and spread it evenly using the correct notched trowel. Allow it to reach the correct tack before placing the flooring, then press and roll the floorcovering firmly into the adhesive. Always follow the flooring manufacturer’s installation instructions and the current F. Ball technical data sheet.

Can F46 be used for outdoor flooring?

No. F46 is intended for appropriate internal flooring installations. A specialist adhesive should be used for external areas or locations exposed to extreme temperatures and weather.

How should unused adhesive be stored?

Keep the lid securely closed and store the tub in suitable conditions away from frost and extreme temperatures. The manufacturer states a shelf life of approximately 12 months in unopened containers stored under good conditions.

Is F46 hazardous?

F46 is not classified as hazardous under the applicable GB CLP regulations. However, it contains preservatives that may produce an allergic reaction, so the safety data sheet and normal handling precautions should be followed.
